Description'Un Coup de Vent' shows Daubigny's love of the open country and especially of water. He set up a studio on a boat, fifteen years before Monet had a floating studio, and painted while sailing along the river Oise, possibly the river in this painting. Daubigny tended to favour simple uncrowded compositions and his chief interest in atmospheric effects is evident here in the stormy sky, painted very thickly using a palette knife. The details in the cloud formations reveal his study of nature, the dark tones of the sky suggesting imminent rainfall. The trees on the riverbank are bent by wind, their forms are effectively suggested by simple strokes of paint and the water is broadly sketched in horizontal strokes.(Extract from 'Images and Insights', Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin, 1993, p. 194)
