DescriptionCoole Park was once the home of Lady Augusta Gregory, dramatist, folklorist and co-founder of the Abbey Theatre. In the early years of the twentieth century it was the centre of the Irish Literary Revival and welcomed W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, John Millington Synge, Sean O’ Casey as well as Lady Gregory’s nephew Hugh Lane. The copper beech in the grounds is carved with many of their initials. The beauty of Coole Park inspired W.B. Yeats, brother of the artist Jack B. Yeats, to compose Wild Swans at Coole among other works. Unfortunately the house fell into neglect during the middle of the twentieth century and was demolished. This is a watercolour landscape. In the foreground is the lake at Coole with a low rolling green hill in the middle distance stretching across the image. Above the luscious green hills is a brownish grey sky. The hills and sky are reflected in the water.
