DescriptionEDWIN LUTYENS
b. London 1869 – d. London 1944
FIRST DESIGN FOR PROPOSED
GALLERY OF MODERN ART,
Edwin Lutyens had previously worked closely with Hugh Lane in 1910 when Lutyens designed the Johannesburg Gallery of Modern Art. The proposal of Edwin Lutyens as the architect of the gallery of modern art was opposed by Councillor Tom Kelly and others on the basis that Lutyens was a British architect. He believed that an Irish architect should instead be commissioned. However, Lutyens did succeed in having some of his designs built in Ireland. These include a house at Lambay Island and the War Memorial Gardens at Islandbridge, in Dublin.
