DescriptionJohn Lewis Brown mostly painted battle scenes and equestrian art but the subject of this work is much less formal. The mountebank otherwise known as a travelling showman or charlatan is shown here lying on the road encouraging and enjoying the tricks of his performing dog. Brown spent all his life in France and achieved a considerable reputation in his day. (JO'D)A circus ringleader in a red and white coat lies on a pathway training his little dog, who is wearing a red cap and sits on his hind legs. To the right a horse grazes and to the left the roof of a house can be seen through trees.
