DescriptionBernard Partridge worked as a cartoonist for Punch magazine from 1891 until 1941. His work included political and humorous cartoons as well as theatre caricatures. His interest in the theatre stemmed from his work as an actor. It was while acting that Partridge firstmet George Bernard Shaw and in 1894 he appeared in Shaw’s play Arms and the Man. In his drawings Partridge preferred to focus on single figures rather than group compositions. This sparkling portrayal of Shaw was reproduced in Punch Magazine in 1925, the year Shaw won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The caption read Mr Punch’s Personalities and the illustration was accompanied by a rhyme inspired by Shaw beginning: ‘This is Mr Bernard Shaw, who has got a gifted jaw.’ Shaw was a vocal supporter of the striking workers during the 1913 Lockout and criticised the Dublin employers for what he believed was their unreasonable and greedy attitude.
