DescriptionOrpen used the pose of the woman here in another work called Study of a Girl (Reg. 177) also in this Gallery’s collection. Here a young mother is shown dispassionately gazing into the distance while her young child clamours over her knee, enticed by the trinkets being enthusiastically waved by the street seller. Orpen has placed the figures in an ambiguous setting with a townscape just visible in the background thus placing the emphasis more on the weary attitude of the woman and suggesting the poverty of the family’s situation.
