DescriptionThomas Kettle (1880-1916), was a former Irish Parliamentary Party MP and in 1908 was made first professor of economics at University College, Dublin. He was married to Mary, the sister of Hanna Sheehy- Skeffington. A number of attempts were made to resolve the bitter Lockout dispute. This included a Peace Commission headed by Professor Kettle. However, the Peace Commission failed to achieve a resolution. As the crisis deepened, a tribunal of inquiry known as the Askwith Inquiry was subsequently set up to meet representatives of employers and of workers, again with the intention of resolving the dispute.
