DescriptionThis drawing reveals Orpen’s immense skill as a draughtsman. Orpen had entered the Metropolitan School of Art shortly before his thirteenth birthday. An extremely talented pupil who excelled in drawing, he was highly esteemed as a student who was eager tolearn. As an adult he pursued a highly successful and lucrative career as a portraitist. However, this did not preclude him from making small sketches of the less well off in society or taking an interest in their welfare. Indeed, among Orpen’s subjects were the hungry families of striking workers gathered at the Liberty Hall soup kitchens. (JO'D)
