DescriptionA brother of the artist William Orpen, Richard Francis Caulfield Orpen hoped to follow a career as an artist but instead for family reasons became an architect. He found success in this profession and wasarchitect to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Trinity College, Dublin as well as designing houses in well-to-do Dublin suburbs. However, he retained his passion for making art and he was an exhibitor at the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1906-1936. Richard Orpen was much admired for his excellent draughtsmanship and Old Dublin reveals his skill at capturing an appealing architectural setting in an atmospheric way as well as depicting the inhabitants of that street. The drawing was made in December 1907 and renowned for his ability to draw quickly, this intimate sketch was probably executed on the spot. (JO'D)
