DescriptionHarry Kernoff was born in London in 1900 to Jewish parents of mixed Russian and Spanish origins. Having moved to Ireland where his father set up a cabinet making business, Kernoff attended night classes at the Metropolitan School of Art. In 1923 he won the Taylor Scholarship and became a full-time day student. He was a regular exhibitor with the RHA and much of his prolific output was produced in his attic studio at 13 Stamer Street. Dublin. His townscapes were not confined to scenes of Dublin and Bridge on the Mall, Westport is a charming view of the west of Ireland town. The painting reveals Kernoff's bold colourful style, his skill in capturing people in everyday life and his theatre set designer's eye for compositions with strong shapes and patterns where, here for example, the architectural details are offset by the foliage of the trees. His style is particular and detailed without being pedantic. On View
