DescriptionGrace Henry was born in Scotland in 1868 and studied art in Brussels and Paris, where she met Paul Henry in 1900, whom she later married. A holiday to Achill Island Co. Mayo in 1910 prompted their move to the West of Ireland where she found a rich source of subject matter, such as Evening, Achill, also in the collection. Returning to Dublin in 1920 they co-founded the Society of Dublin Painters, which became synonymous with the avant-garde in Ireland. During the 1920s and 30s she travelled extensively around Italy and France, studying under André Lhote in Paris. In 1949 she was elected an Honorary Member of the Royal Hibernian Academy.
Henry is recognised for her paintings of the inhabitants of rural Ireland. The expressive brushwork in 'Woman in Train on Way to Market, Glens of Antrim' is also markedly different to other works in the collection, evidence of her ongoing experimentation with colour and form.
