DescriptionJesse Jones throws a spotlight on feminism in Tremble Tremble, a project commissioned to represent Ireland at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. The title is inspired by the 1970s Italian wages for housework movement, during which women chanted “Tremate, tremate, le streghe sono tornate! (Tremble, tremble, the witches have returned!).” The work, a multimedia installation made of video, sculpture and performance was informed by the growing women’s rights movement in Ireland, and the discussions surrounding the historic referendum on Ireland’s 8th Amendment which was repealed in 2018. The witch is used as a feminist archetype who may transform reality, in this case a legal order. Sound design and composition by Susan Stenger. Production management and AV programming by Aaron Kelly.
