DescriptionUsing found materials and images from the contemporary urban environment to create alternative scenarios, Niamh McCann’s practice is diverse and playful. In Sculpture Picture Furniture Gesture McCann re-stages gestures portrayed in iconic statues of James Larkin on O’Connell Street, Dublin, and of Edward Carson outside the Stormont Parliament Buildings, Belfast. Taken from specific photos from political rallies, these gestures also reference images from art history ranging from ancient Greek sculptures to religious iconography. The works Sculpture Picture Furniture Gesture were exhibited at Hugh Lane Gallery in Niamh McCann’s 2018 solo show Furtive Tears.
