DescriptionAlfred 'Andy' Cope was Assistant Under-Secretary for Ireland, 1920-22. John Lavery wrote in his autobiography, “There was one Englishman whose name seldom appeared in print, but who was working night and day behind the scenes to bring about a settlement. He was the liaison officer between the two countries, known to his friends as "Andy" Cope and to the world as Sir Alfred Cope, K.C.B., and so forth, Assistant Under-Secretary for Ireland, and Clerk of the Privy Council.” (John Lavery, The Life of a Painter, 1940, p.233)On View
