DescriptionKevin O'Higgins first sat to John Lavery for this portrait in London in 1923. It was during this time that Hazel befriended O'Higgins, then Minister for Home Affairs and Vice-President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State, a position he held until 1927. The serious expression of the sitter, an indication of the nature of O'Higgins's personality, prompted Hazel to nickname him 'Gloomy Guss'. O'Higgins was assassinated on 10th July 1927.
