BiographyFrederick Brown was born on 14th March 1851 at Chelmsford, Essex. He studied at the R.C.A from 1868 to 1877 and then in Paris under Robert-Fleury and Bouguereau in 1883. He taught at the Westminster School of Art from 1877 to 1892. He succeeded Legros as Slade Professor, London, and consolidated his reforms, producing a series of fine painters between 1892 and 1918. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between the years 1879 and 1885, and again in 1933. He played a large part in the foundation and constitution of the New English Art Club in 1886. As well as an artist, he was an important collector of his contemporaries' and pupils' work. He published his "Recollections" in Artwork, Nos. 23 and 24, 1930.
