Deborah Brown1927 - 2023

Deborah Brown was born in Belfast in 1927. She studied in the Belfast and Dublin Colleges of Art. In 1950 she moved to Paris where she became interested in abstract art. Painter Humbert Craig influenced her early work but in the 1960s she began to move away from the canvas and onto sculpture. Initially she embarked upon this transition by building up the canvas with papier maché. She then progressed to fibreglass sculpture. The 1980s were her most productive period: she began to experiment with wire. The result was critically acclaimed wire sculptures covered in papier maché.
