Stephen Bone1904 - 1958

Born at Chiswick, the son of the illustrator Sir Muirhead Bone. Educated at Bedales, and then at the Slade. A member of the New English Art Club and of the Association of Independent Artists. He was a camouflage officer and then an official War Artist attached to the Royal Navy. Illustrated books by his mother Gertrude Bone ('Of the Western Islands'), and the poems of W.H. Davies. In the mid '30s prepared the 12th Shell Guide, 'The West Coast of Scotland'; others were by John Betjeman, the Nash brothers and John Piper. Published 'Albion: An Artist's Britain' in 1939 - a study of Britain in context, stressing The Weather and The Seasons, The Traveller and The Industrial Landscape; this revealed his benevolent attitude to modern devices - 'The car is freedom...'
