BiographyBorn in rural France, 1867 he studied law but later pursued painting. He became a student at the Academie Julian and here he met a group of students who called themselves The Nabis. They were interested in new developments in French painting, which displayed the landscape as more emotive than realistic. He was very interested in decorative and applied art, being influenced by Japanese woodcuts. Around the turn of the century a lot of his work was in the Art Nouveau style.
