Josef Albers1888 - 1976
Born 1888 in Bottrop, Germany. Albers studied art in Berlin (1913-1915), Essen (1916-1919) and Munich (1919-1920). From 1920 he studied and taught at the Weimar Bauhaus. He moved to America and became principal at the Yale School of Design in 1950. He was a major influence on many post-war artists including Robert Rauschenberg and Donald Judd. He was a gifted craftsman but as a painter he is best known for his long series of abstract works - Homage to the Square.
