Gerard Chowne

Gerard Chowne was born in India in 1875. He studied at the Slade in London from 1893-9 and also in Paris and Rome. He was a member of the New English Art Club from 1905 onwards and also exhibited there. He taught painting at Liverpool University from 1905-8. His first solo exhibition was held in the Carfax Gallery in 1911. During the First World War, he served with the Salonika Force and died of his wounds in Macedonia in 1917. A memorial exhibition of his work was held at the N.E.A.C. in the Winter of 1917-8
