Albert Joseph Moore1841 - 1893

Albert Joseph Moore was one of the central figures of the Aesthetic Movement, which also included Whistler, Watts, Leighton and Alma-Tadema. Born in York, the son of a painter, Moore studied at the Royal Academy Schools where he trained with Simeon Solomon (who is also represented in the Permanent Collection). Moore was influenced by naturalism and detail of the Pre-Raphaelite School of painting and by classical sculpture, particularly the Elgin Marbles. He adopted the Greek anthemion flower motif as his monogram.
