DescriptionAlthough called to the Bar in 1866 John Butler Yeats moved to London with his family in 1867 to pursue a career as an artist. While portraiture was generally a lucrative genre, thereafter a life of financial uncertainty followed. However, Yeats's sensitivity in characterization was widely praised and among the fine portraits by him in this Collection is a painting of his son, the poet William Butler Yeats. The artist Jack Butler Yeats was also his son. In 1907 John Butler Yeats moved to New York where the New York lawyer and collector John Quinn was an important supporter. Walt Kuhn studied at the Academie Colarossi in Paris from 1901-03 and at the Royal Academy Munich and is best known for his cartoons and portraits of circus performers. Walt Kuhn also acted as an art advisor to John Quinn. (JO'D)
