DescriptionThis a portrait painting of Frank Rutter, who donated the work to the gallery. He is shown half-length facing the viewer. He is wearing a dark coloured jacket, a beige waistcoat, a wine coloured tie and a white shirt. His moustache is a reddish brown. Rutter (1876 - 1937) was art critic for The Sunday Times. He was a champion in England of modern art, founding the French Impressionist Fund in 1905 to buy work for the national collection. He also actively supported women's suffrage. From 1912 to 1917 he was curator of Leeds City Art Gallery.
