DescriptionRenato Guttuso was an important figure in Italian art. His expressionist style was counter to both the naturalism favoured by the Fascist movement and to the perceived elitism of abstraction. This is one of a series of paintings of the rooftops near the artist’s studio in Rome. Red Roofs has recently undergone conservation treatment enabling it to be exhibited after a period in storage.

Guttuso was the co-founder of 'Fronte Nuovo delle Arti' in Italy. Represented in Venice Biennale 1956 (prize winner).
