DescriptionThis is a colour intaglio print (etching and aquatint) on paper. This particular technique is known as sugar lift. The artist paints a solution of sugar and ink onto the plate, it is then covered in a ground, which acts as a resist to the acid. The plate is submerged in warm water, thus melting the sugar solution and lifting the resist in those areas. It is covered in aquatint and placed into the acid. It results in the immiscible texture as seen in this print.

A native of the Netherlands, Jan de Fouw studied at the College of Art, The Hague and has resided in Ireland since 1951.

Jan is a graphic designer and printmaker and a lecturer in graphic art. His private interest is mainly concentrated on natural form and movement. The identification with nature forms the basis of images expressed in lino-and woodcuts, etchings and drawings.

A founder member of the Graphic Studio, Dublin and of the Society of Designers in Ireland, Jan also co-directed the Black Church Studio from 1995 to 1996 and is an Honorary Associate of the National College of Art, Dublin.
