DescriptionSaint Patrick approaches on a boat with two rectangular sails. There is a small lamp burning brightly beside him. The sails are completely still as is the water. On the shore in the immediate foreground are a group of men dressed in Celtic clothing. Some of them are climbing down a cliff face. One man standing on the shore looks over his shoulder towards the approaching boat with an expression of shock. He has a circular shield on his back and a sword in his hand. Some of the other men are carrying small chopping axes; one man is actually tying an axe head to a wooden shaft. The whole composition is stylised with the hint of Pre-Raphaelite influence combined with a Scandinavian tone. The work is coloured with shades and tones of muted brown.
