DescriptionThis is one of Roderic O'Conor's earliest known paintings, which dates prior to his first visit to France and his contact with Impressionism. O'Conor studied at the Academie Royal des Beaux Arts d'Anvers between 1883 and 1884 and spent the following two years in Dublin studying at the Royal Hibernian Academy. There is little information regarding O'Conor's time in Wales, it may have been simply a holiday from his art studies. This seascape is strongly painted using a thick impasto and the moody contrast between the shaded foreground and the brighter sky might suggest the influence of Karl Verlat, his teacher in Belgium. The desceptively naturalistic view of the shore already reveals an early facility with paint, perticularly in the way in which he has depicted the different characteristics of the sea and rocks.
