DescriptionBorn in Dublin in 1946, Richard Gorman was educated in Ireland but has divided his time between Dublin and Milan since the 1980s. The work of Gorman follows his very personal insights and intentions in the manipulation of colours, forms and metaphors on the flat plane of a canvas. His use of washi paper for printing comes from his time spent in Japan which greatly influenced his thinking. He has said, “A painting is a conflict with disorder. A painting is not a message to anyone. It may not tell a story, it may not even represent an idea. It means only that it signifies what I spend my time doing – it is the outcome of that process of making and remaking on the flat surface in search of a precarious balance.” The group of 12 works on paper were exhibited in his 2023 survey exhibition ‘Richard Gorman: Living Through Paint(ing)’ at Hugh Lane Gallery. On View
