DescriptionLe Brocquy skilfully suggests the crowded streetscape of Sackville Street, which was renamed O’Connell Street in 1924. As Dublin’s main thoroughfare it has been a backdrop to many of Ireland’s most historically significant events, not least among them the gatherings for the Lockout of 1913 and the Easter Rising at the GPO in 1916.This series was inspired by James Joyce’s Dubliners and this imagecalls to mind Joseph Cashman’s iconic photograph of Bloody Sunday in Sackville (O’Connell) Street on 31 August 1913.
