Lady Lavery Memorial Bequest through Sir John Lavery, 1935.

DescriptionSir Winston Spencer Churchill, author and politician, was a member of the British delegation and a close friend of the Laverys. An amateur artist, he received instruction in painting from both John and Hazel. In addition to this portrait Lavery captured a more informal pose of the statesman working at his easel. Churchill did not sit to Lavery during the Treaty negotiations, so the artist, as part of the series of delegate portraits which he presented to the Hugh Lane Gallery, donated this early portrait which is an extremely good likeness.(Catalogue Entry [6]: Hazel, Lady Lavery Society and Politics, Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, 18 September - 3 November 1996, p. 217)
