Works Donated by the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland
Founded by Irish artist, collector and activist Sarah Purser in 1924, the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland (FNCI) secures artworks and important artefacts for Ireland's public collections. The FNCI made its first donation to the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art (now Hugh Lane Gallery) in 1924 - a contribution from Purser herself, 'Flower Piece' by Ernest Quost. The Friends facilitated donations by individuals and soon began proactively purchasing works, including modern paintings from galleries in London and Paris.
The FNCI also campaigned for the return of the thirty-nine pictures of the Sir Hugh Lane Bequest to Dublin which were housed at the National Gallery of London after Lane's death. Under Purser's guidance, it also helped secure Charlemont House as the permanent house for Hugh Lane Gallery. Over the last century, the FNCI has continued its integral role in Irish cultural life, supporting numerous institutions. The FNCI has donated over 140 works to Hugh Lane Gallery.
