John Lavery's 1921 Treaty Portraits

In 1935, John Lavery gifted the extraordinary group of paintings to the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art (now Hugh Lane Gallery). Among the 34 paintings is the Lady Lavery Memorial Bequest were nine portraits of signatories to the 1921 Treaty between Great Britain and Ireland. Many of these portraits were realised during the Treaty negotiations in Lavery's London studio.

Lavery's Treaty portraits were displayed in the Irish Embassy, London, from October 2021–November 2021 and then in the 2023 exhibition 'Studio & State: The Laverys and the Anglo-Irish Treaty' at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks.
