DescriptionA girl is sewing beside an open window. She is holding a piece of material in her left hand and a scissors in her right. The material rests on a chair. If this subject reminds us that Corot's mother was a fashionable dressmaker in Paris, the attitude of the model reminds the "false" series of women painted in Corot's studio in the 1860's.
Corot drew constantly. This charcoal on paper, which is not reproduced by Robaut (vol. IV, p.64, n°2890), is dated c. 1860-65 when Corot was not using hard pencil any longer, as at the beginning of his career, but charcoal.
This drawing, untitled The Sempstress, n°264, in the 1904 Dublin exhibition catalogue, was wrongly said to be a canvas but dimensions match.
